Appetizer: Hotel Chevalier by Wes Anderson

Anderson just released out in the open a prequel to his upcoming the Darjeeling Limited. With the full feature being much anticipated, this short movie prequel is a sweet treat to munch on until the main course arrives. Anderson maintains in this short his trademark emotional blankness on the surface, which shields in a quite obvious way all that the characters suppress. Like his previous works, this one sports a wonderful soundtrack and superb camera work. Wonderful.

How-To Love: Bill Plympton

How-To Love: Bill PlymptonSex is at times portrayed in a cheap manner, and at times as a series of precious moments between two people. Sex can turn into porn, and it can turn in romance. But what we tend to forget is that just like any other part of our life, it’s mostly, and beyond all, fuckin’ ridiculous. We often preach not to take life so seriously, to laugh on them, so why do we laugh about sex so rarely? Bill Plymton, on the other hand, takes this matter in a much more healthy perspective.

Hard Questions: Are You the Favorite Person of Anybody? by Miranda July

Are You the Favorite Person of Anybody? by Miranda July [YouTube]
Hard Questions: Are You the Favorite Person of Anybody? by Miranda JulyHard and difficult questions are somewhat like caterpillars. First they exhibit themselves, and then they start worming their way down, making way and pushing all that they dug out into the open. Such questions, you can never know where they will lead you. They might lead you nowhere and will close all doors for you, and they might take you deep into places that you are not at all ready to go to. So, careful, dear, hard questions are a powerful tool that we all have against one another and for one another, even when we get no answers.

Roman Polanski - Dwaj ludzie z szafa (Two Men and a Wardrobe) (1958) [131MB AVI]
Roman Polanski - Dwaj ludzie z szafa (Two Men and a Wardrobe) (1958)When A and B come out of the sea, carrying their life and friendship in the form of a wardrobe, the world can not help but stare with contempt and hate. After society tries to trip them on every step and the way, they tire and return to the sea. This is not a special world that Polanski created in this short film of his, this is our own, on all its cruelty and fear of the other, the alien. Fuckin’ aliens! Send them back to the where they came from - the sea!
From IMDB:

Two men come up from the beach carrying a large wardrobe between them. They come up into the town but not only find that accommodation is difficult to come by with their wooden travelling companion but also that both women and men shun or mistreat them.

Personal Point of View: Project 155

1 story. 5 directors. 5 different visions. We wrote a script celebrating a creative independent view point and we gave it to five directors so each one would film it according to their vision. This is what Ariel Winograd, Rodrigo Garcia Saiz, Plàstico, Cayetana Vidal and Nicolàs Parodi did. Enjoy.

My Little Pony: Una Favola by Nicole McDonald

For all the girls out there who ever wanted a pony. For all the boys out there who ever wanted a girl. Oh, maybe it should go the other way around… For all the ponies out there who ever wanted a boy, for all the girls out there who… Ah, it’s not that it all sounds wrong, it all just sounds right. So, let’s try it this way: to all these who ever wanted something to pet. Yes, back again to our petting theme. But, no, it’s not the same. Amy Sol’s petting is that of cuteness and sweetness, and here the petting is erotic. But, naturally, it’s actually quite the same. To all of you, it goes like this: There was once a girl who received a pony, which she loved so much that it stained her forever.

Simple Life: Tales of Mere Existence by Lev YilmazExcept of capturing a great deal of what it’s to be horny, and except the meaning of depression, and beside the the how-to-sit-in-a-bus thing, there is really not much here. Actually, in all of these there is not much as well, but, to be honest, this is the point, and it’s a damn good one. Oh, but there is something here, a bunch of wonderful short animated clips and a few comics. Check out the links for more wonderful stuff.

Joyful Poetry: The Danish Poet by Torill Kove

The Danish Poet (full movie) [47MB FLV]
Short Clip [11MB MOV] [7.5MB MOV]

Joyful Poetry: The Danish Poet by Torill Kove

Sweet. Simple. Straight. Just like poetry, the joyful kind of poetry. Joy doesn’t have to twist and turn, to hide and mask itself, joy can go out in the open, straight, simple, naked and still be as attractive, if not more. The Danish Poet is a Norwegian short animated movie narrated by Liv Ulmann. The wonders that are transported through the cherry animation deserve, and require, a top quality copy, and the stream here is just not enough. Just watch the clips and see.

Visual Wishes: He Wishes for the Clothes of Heaven by W.B. Yeats

He Wishes for the Clothes of Heaven (visual poem) [12MB MP4] [23MB MOV] [YouTube]

Visual Wishes: He Wishes for the Clothes of Heaven by W.B. Yeats

Had I the heavens’ embroidered cloths,
Enwrought with golden and silver light,
The blue and the dim and the dark clothes
Of night and light and half-light,
I would spread the cloths under your feet;
But I, being poor, have only my dreams;
I have spread my dreams under your feet;
Tread softly because you tread on my dreams.

Heebok Lee made this wonderful visual poem inspired by Yeats’ poem. The MP4 or MOV files are recommended for better quality. It’s worth it.

Aesthetic Porn: Cashback by Sean Ellis

Cashback (2004) [YouTube]
Cashback (2006) - Trailer [YouTube]

The genius quality that men managed to induce into art is the almost complete correlation between eroticism and high aesthetic value. It’s wonderful, we have the privilege of drolling over a girl, and excuse it as an aesthetic admiration. Of course, a beautiful girl is a highly aesthetic object, but still, agree with it or not, the connection between erotic attraction and aesthetic value does seem odd, as if it was created this way.
Cashback is two things: a short movie and a full length feature. The short movie, which is linked here, is a wonderful presentation of an idea which was created in 2004. The full length feature is a new movie released recently, which takes the idea and adds a “personal” touch to it. Looks promising.
