I Can’t Tell In His Eyes [MP3] Doubt/Hope [MP3] There is No Light [VIDEO] Building their sound on vocal expressions and drums, Mariam Wallentin and Andreas Werliin of Wildbirds & Peacedrums expand it to a level of free and raw blues. The tender intimacy, soaring ballads and certain jazz elements of their debut album Heartcore (2008) take the listener to new heights only to be grounded by the duo’s fiery passion, beautifully brutal and experimental crashes, powerful drumming and layers of sounds. The flowing dynamic ease, waves of strong emotions and intensity of Heartcore create beautiful and distinct soundscapes. Links: Official website MySpace profile
Lyrical and delightful, New Buffalo’s album Somewhere, Anywhere (2007) is full of Sally Seltmann’s beautiful voice. Her very clean bright sound is permeated with innocence, gentle humor and hope, but without being in the slightest bit overdone. Lovely, emotional and utterly memorable, New Buffalo makes you ache and smile, all at once. Links: Official website MySpace profile Cheer Me Up Thank You [VIDEO]
To Have and to Hold (from Headgit) [MP3] Option Paralysis (from Profile) [MP3] Craft is Dead [MP3] My LCA [MP3] To Have and To Hold (live) [MP3] Option Paralysis [39MB MOV] My LCA [23MB MOV] 6 strings. By six string the world is hung over the abyss. String one - for music, the others too. The most distinct movement of what is called popular music is the strumming of the the strings, mostly six. People tried to move differently throughout the year, but none managed to over come this basic principal of modern music - the strum.
Is this all? Is that our music? Our so beloved treasure? Is it all based on a single gesture. Life losses its meaning, the blood runs out of cheeks, we turn pale. Music is nothing but a strum, and what can we actually say about a strum, it’s not unique, it’s primitive, not much can be done with. Morbidity takes over us, the stereo has been turned off and started to gather dust. Even our previous non-iPod is stuck deep inside our drawer gathering layers upon layers of things upon it.
But wait, just listen to Githead. A strum is not just a strum, a guitar is and endless universe, and once you bring drums, organs and tons of other instruments, you have a ship to travel the space of music. The strum doesn’t have to be new, its uniqueness comes from its inner nature. Githead convinced me that this nature exists by reviving the past, but with a twist. Links: Official Website
Psapp - Tricycle [MOV] Psapp - Hi [YouTube Video] Once kids, today a bit older. When you grow old a bit of melancholia drowns in you, as if you were a pond. When still young enough, the water in the pond are still clear. Still a child, and life are still a merry-go-around. Later on everything might crumble, at least at some points, but wait, this time is not yet here, because Psapp are only kids. They started as babies, and now they are a bit older, some sort of grown ups, or grown ups wanna-bees (bees!). Now melancholia has entered their life, time goes by and it sinks deep inside, but Psapp are still Psapp, and still eternal children playing around. The music is touched by time, tainted (for the better) with a bit of melancholia, but is still the childish celebration it was on the first record. Psapp might grow old in a graceful way, and will give us many more glimpses into the journey. Links: Official Website Domino Records Psapp’s MySpace
Broken Social Scene - Fire Eye’d Boy [80MB MOV][10MB MOV] New Broken Social Scene video for “Fire Eye’d Boy.” Features the band members in boot camp-like training and is rumoured to be making fun of Canadian Idol. The idea followed Kevin Drew’s comments on Canadian Idol participants at the 2006 Juno Awards. One of the best videos that came out lately.
This Heart is a Stone [MP3] First of all, yes I want to DJ in the street. I thought about this tonight while listening to this happy piece of music. I want to just take my laptop and a loud pair of speakers and stand in the middle of a full street on a Friday morning, where most people go by, and put on some happy good music. People will go by, normal people, who have no idea about music, they will stop for a minute or two and then go with a smile on their faces, and they won’t even know why. The problem is of course to get power to the speakers (I can always take my stereo system, it’s good enough). So if you have any idea, I will be happy to here. I want to get going with this and do it as soon as possible.
And now, sing along: They say your middle name is trouble
But I know it’s Caroline
They say you remind them of problems
But I think you look like Audrey
Caroline, I know that you put on a show
Every time you two disagree
This heart is a stone
Second, I love the 50s, and this is exactly what this piece is, a piece from the 50s. The rest of their stuff is good as well, good hearted indie/twee pop, but this piece is brilliant 50s, and the 50s had the best pop. That was real pop, as pop should be. And, yes, there’s such thing as good pop. Oh, and you got to give it to them for the brilliant name - Acid House Kings.
