As Surrealism rose to prominence, and as its Abstract scion was born, art moved from the outside to the inside. It became introspective, and dealt with what occured inside the human mind. When other people got into the picture, they got in only as far as they affected the artist. When the outdoors, which was once such a glorified subject of painting, stumbled in, it was seen only through the eyes of the artist, which became more and more distorting. We forgot to really look around us without expecting the world to mirror ourselves. Even the expressionist way that gave birth to Surrealism, was somewhat abandoned and replaced by a stronger inner inclination. This is a great shame, because although we have numerous depictions of the world as it used to be, it seems that our current world is not being documented properly. Kim Cogan does exactly this, he captures our world, and although he puts his inner self into his work, he does not forget the world’s independent existence.
