My Mama Never Taught Me How To [MP3]
Dear Bela [MP3]
Don’t Be Cruel [MP3]
One of the common theories explaining Elvis Presley’s success regards him as a black voice in a white body, that enabled the power of Blues to permeate popular culture for the first time, while allowing the white audience to feel safe. Safe because Elvis himself was white. Listening to Annette Peacock one can only wonder why she didn’t receive such status. After all, her voice, like Elvis, is deep and bluesy. However, no white American male can feel safe with her style of power preaching, her self liberation and her loudly proclaimed mutiny against this same safety seeking white American. In X-Dreams she preaches and sings, moving from yelling at you about what she will do and what she won’t, to caressing you with sweet Jazz melodies. The record starts as one thing, and quickly shifts to another. No heroine is ever complete without some kind of schizo.
