To be born with a piano as a brother is burdening. The expectation are sky high, but sometimes sky high expectations are paying off and something wonderful is born. To marry a contrabass is demanding. It’s big heavy and very deep, so you can actually drown inside like in a swamp. But the queen of the swamp is the most wonderful thing (to these of you who thought the king was something special), and she can sing and warp you with her voice.
Dolores is not the queen of the swamp, but she was born with the piano and at times do marry a contrabass. What Dolores is really is, is her voice and superb writing ability. It’s the voice of the standards, of the great singers of old, smoked even more, rough and caressing. It’s the writing which is honest and simple, and without trying to stun you with complex acrobatics is captures. You become an excited little boy who just want to sit there and marvel. In a way Dolores was born at the wrong time. She probably would be remembered as a legend if she were born 50 years before. However, she was sent to here and now to remind us and revive the great music, and to give it a new flare. Old is old, Dolores is something completely new and wonderful.
