Once in a while comes a track which is an anthem, and such is Gustav’s “We Shall Overcome”. From the moment I heard it I knew that it will become a part of me, even if for a short while. Anthems nowadays are short lived, but they are still anthems. I heard it about a dozen times until now, and it still brings me great hope. It is that combination of time, lyrics and the general happy (but not too happy) sound it has. And for that it’s a wonderful track, that will accompany me for the next few weeks. But don’t mistake Gustav, this track doesn’t represent her album, it is just one gem out of many. Each track is differently constructed, the only thing that connects them is the indie spirit of the writer. Except “We Shall Overcome” all the track are in German, so I am quite sure I am not getting the most of them. As I heard the album has a very rich ideological content (the titles of the album translates to “save the whales”). However, this doesn’t lessen the joy this album gives me, and I can even say that the sound of German only improves the tracks. The style of the album range from rockish tunes to indie-glitch and to German techno (reminds me of Run Lola Run). Gustav is not another euro-chick that will sing her sweet tunes in half broken English half her native tongue, she has an agenda and she delivers it to the listener with an ever shifting flame. A beautiful album that has everything in it, but still manages to be a complete being.
